The Democracy Alliance, a prominent network of liberal donors, is gearing up to allocate funds strategically in New York and California with the aim of helping Democrats regain control of the House in the 2024 elections. The group, known for channeling significant financial support to progressive causes, plans to raise $10 million for the “Battleground New York” coalition, focusing on reclaiming four seats Republicans flipped in the state during the 2022 midterms and safeguarding one narrowly held by a Democrat.
A private memo circulated among members highlighted the Democracy Alliance’s commitment to prioritizing House races in 2024, emphasizing the importance of learning from the losses in New York and California in 2022. The surprise battleground status of New York, where Republicans secured four seats despite a Democratic majority, underscored the need for renewed efforts in these traditionally deep-blue states.
The narrow nine-vote margin in the House has intensified the focus on gaining ground in New York and California. Additionally, the group plans to support President Biden’s agenda by investing in swing states and liberal organizations dedicated to voting rights.
Democracy Alliance donors, who remain anonymous, are set to contribute tens of millions of dollars to various Democratic and progressive groups participating in the 2024 race. The alliance, with a track record of donating over $1 billion to progressive causes over two decades, is also actively involved in efforts to counter third-party presidential candidacies, viewing them as potential threats to Biden’s re-election chances.
The organization recently celebrated its successful involvement in an Ohio ballot measure, approved by voters on Tuesday, which enshrines abortion rights in the state constitution. The victory reinforced the alliance’s commitment to continue prioritizing abortion rights in its 2024 strategy.
As the Democracy Alliance prepares for a private meeting with its donors, its president, Pamela Shifman, expressed confidence in the organization’s strategy and highlighted the effectiveness of a well-resourced campaign in pushing back against challenges, signaling a continued focus on abortion rights in the upcoming election cycle.
