Independent Presidential Candidates Meet with Teamsters Amid Endorsement Process
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a prominent labor union, is in the midst of its endorsement process, inviting long-shot independent presidential candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West for meetings. While President Joe Biden won the union’s endorsement in 2020, the Teamsters are exploring their options and have also invited candidates from both major parties, including GOP primary candidate Asa Hutchinson and Democratic primary challengers Marianne Williamson and Rep. Dean Phillips.
This marks the first time the Teamsters have held roundtable interviews with candidates from both parties and independents. The union, representing 1.3 million members, plays a crucial role in pro-union states, and its endorsement can influence elections. While Biden has a close working relationship with the Teamsters, the union is considering all options before making a decision.
Cornel West Suggests Biden May Withdraw from 2024 Presidential Race
Independent presidential candidate Cornel West has suggested that President Joe Biden might withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, drawing parallels with President Lyndon B. Johnson’s decision in 1968. West, who is running as an independent, expressed doubts about Biden’s ability to sustain the mounting criticism from the left on various issues. West also indicated openness to running against alternative Democratic candidates, such as Gavin Newsom of California and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan.
West, wearing a three-piece black suit, addressed concerns that his candidacy could act as a spoiler, stating, “A vote for Biden, a vote for Trump is a vote for Biden and a vote for Trump.” He rejected the spoiler label, emphasizing that voters have the right to choose based on the candidates’ merits.
West Critiques Trump and Biden, Considers Competing Against Alternatives
Cornel West, 2024 independent presidential candidate, provided a critique of both major party frontrunners, referring to Donald Trump as a “bona fide gangsta, Neo fascist, Pied Piper leading the country for the second civil war,” and characterizing Joe Biden as a “milquetoast neoliberal with military adventurism, possibly leading the world toward World War III.” West, known for his cultural criticism, expressed concerns about Trump domestically and Biden in terms of foreign policy.
West, who publicly campaigned for Biden in 2020, revealed that he couldn’t vote for him at the ballot box and suggested that Biden might have an “LBJ moment” and withdraw from the 2024 race. West, now an independent candidate, rejected the idea that his candidacy would be a spoiler, emphasizing voters’ right to choose based on their preferences.
