Connecticut 2024 Election Update

Connecticut’s 2024 election buzz ignited last week, more than a year ahead of the polls, with U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes confirming her plan to run for another congressional term. Hayes, a Democrat from the state’s conservative corner, faces an anticipated competitive re-election race. The state’s delegation also contemplates whether long-standing incumbents, including Chris Murphy, will seek re-election.

At the 2016 Democratic National Convention, Rosa DeLauro shares a laugh with Joe Courtney, left, and John Larson.

Chris Murphy, Democrat, plans to run for a third U.S. Senate term, fundraising vigorously. He’s facing Republican opponents John Flynn and Robert Hyde, known for past campaign tactics. Murphy has been a strong advocate for stricter gun laws and won by comfortable margins in previous elections.

Incumbent John Larson, Democrat, intends to run again for the 1st District, strongly Democratic and won with over 61% of the vote in 2022. Joe Courtney, Democrat, seeks re-election in the 2nd District, known for his support of submarine production. Former state Rep. Mike France plans to challenge him.

Powerful Rosa DeLauro, Democrat, seeks an 18th term in the 3rd District, aiming to regain the chair of the House Appropriations Committee. Jim Himes, Democrat, is running for a ninth term in the shifting 4th District, with a focus on financial services and intelligence committees.

Jahana Hayes, Democrat, confirmed her re-election bid in the 5th District. She narrowly won in 2022 against Republican George Logan, who might challenge her again. Hayes, the first Black woman and Democrat elected from Connecticut, faces the possibility of another competitive race.
