A group of about 30 members of Congress, including Rep. Jesse Jackson’s son and a lead impeachment manager from President Trump’s trial, are supporting Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) in the competitive 2024 Democratic primary for Maryland’s open U.S. Senate seat.
Trone’s campaign revealed that Reps. Jonathan L. Jackson (D-Ill.) and Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) are among the endorsers from various states. They’re backing Trone to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.). Trone faces competition from Angela D. Alsobrooks (D), favored by the establishment and endorsed by notable Democrats in Maryland, and Will Jawando (D-At Large), the most liberal candidate.
Trone is self-funding his campaign, giving him a financial edge. He expressed gratitude for support from diverse liberal leaders who believe he’s prepared to lead immediately in the Senate.
Candidates are emphasizing their liberalism since Rep. Jamie B. Raskin (D-Md.) chose reelection instead of entering the race. Raskin hasn’t endorsed anyone for the May primary.
Jackson praised Trone’s actions in Congress, addressing issues like criminal justice, fentanyl-related problems, and mental health.
Among the 27 endorsing Trone are Reps. Colin Allred (Tex.), Susie Lee (Nev.), and Ann Kuster (N.H.), some of whom are running for Senate in their states.
The 2024 Maryland candidates are gathering endorsements to gain ground in the open race. Alsobrooks gained support from Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Reps. Steny H. Hoyer and Kweisi Mfume. Jawando benefits from a new political action committee aiming to promote his candidacy with a multimillion dollar effort.
