Denver, CO — The Colorado Supreme Court finds itself in the midst of a security concern as the Denver Police Department investigates incidents targeting justices. This heightened alert comes in the wake of the court’s decision to remove former President Donald Trump from the state’s presidential primary ballot.
Investigations Underway
The Denver Police Department is conducting thorough investigations into the incidents, maintaining extra patrols around the residences of the justices for added security. The department, citing safety and privacy considerations, has not disclosed specific details about the ongoing investigations.
FBI Collaboration
Collaborating with local law enforcement, the FBI is actively involved in addressing the security threats against the Colorado Supreme Court justices. Vikki Migoya, a spokesperson for the Denver FBI office, emphasized the commitment to investigating any threats or violence rooted in extremist views.
Court Decision and Controversy
In a recent 4-3 decision, the Colorado Supreme Court overturned a district court judge’s ruling related to Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. The district court judge had argued that while Trump incited an insurrection, the U.S. Constitution’s insurrection clause might not apply to presidential eligibility.
However, the state’s highest court disagreed, favoring arguments presented by six Colorado Republican and unaffiliated voters. They contended that barring former confederates from lower offices while leaving the presidency unrestricted was nonsensical.
Stay on Decision
The Colorado Supreme Court has stayed its decision until January 4, awaiting a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court. This development adds urgency, as Colorado officials stress the need to resolve the matter by January 5, the deadline for printing presidential primary ballots.
