China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, expressed concern over Israel’s actions in response to last week’s invasion by Hamas, stating that they have extended beyond self-defense. Speaking to Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Wang Yi underscored China’s interest in helping resolve the conflict and address the underlying issues concerning the Palestinian population.

Intensive Communication for Ceasefire

While no direct quotes from Wang’s remarks during the phone conversation were provided, China’s official news agency, Xinhua, reported that “China is in intensive communication with all parties to push for a ceasefire and an end to the fighting.” Wang emphasized the pressing task of ensuring the safety of civilians, opening humanitarian corridors for aid promptly, and safeguarding the basic needs of the people in Gaza.

Changing Dynamics in the Middle East

Prior to the Hamas incursion and Israel’s military response, it was believed that Israel and Saudi Arabia, driven by a common animosity toward Iran, were working toward a normalization of relations. This development had the potential to shift the dynamics in the Middle East.

China’s Expanding Influence in the Middle East

Historically, China has not played a significant role in Middle East affairs. However, the report of the conversation between China and Saudi Arabia suggests China’s intentions to expand its influence in the region. Additionally, Xinhua reported on a conversation between Wang and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, which included discussions about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
