Cherokee Nation member Kimberly Teehee is poised for a re-appointment to the U.S. Congress, marking another milestone in her career. Notably, Teehee achieved the distinction of being the inaugural Cherokee delegate to Congress. Her official swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for this upcoming Friday.
Teehee’s selection for this role comes from the endorsement of Cherokee Nation’s Principal Chief, Chuck Hoskin Junior. Chief Hoskin commended Teehee’s lifelong dedication to advocating for Native American interests. He expressed his confidence in her abilities, stating, “Kim Teehee has already etched her name in history as the first Cherokee Nation Delegate to Congress. Yet, there’s more history to be written. It remains our steadfast endeavor to urge Congress to fulfill its clear responsibility and ensure her rightful seat. Kim Teehee’s qualifications to serve as Delegate to Congress are unparalleled.”
In response to her re-nomination, Teehee expressed her gratitude and commitment to the role. She remarked, “I am deeply honored that Chief Hoskin has once again bestowed his faith in me to represent the Cherokee Nation in the halls of Congress. The contemporary challenges facing Indian Country demand immediate attention, underscoring the significance of Native American voices in the upper echelons of the federal government. Thus, it is imperative for the House to expeditiously uphold the pledge outlined in the 1835 Treaty of New Echota and facilitate the seating of the Cherokee Nation’s designated delegate.”
