Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new leader of the Catholic Church, becoming Pope Leo XIV, the first pope from the United States. The surprise choice was announced on Thursday after white smoke emerged from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signifying the successful election by the 133 cardinal electors.

Pope Leo XIV appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and greeted the crowd in Italian and Spanish, but did not address them in English:

“Peace be with you all,” he said, emphasizing themes of peace and charity.

Background of Pope Leo XIV

Born in Chicago and currently 69 years old, Prevost spent much of his career as a missionary in Peru and became a cardinal in 2023. Known for his quiet and humble style, Prevost had limited public exposure before his election.
Prevost served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in northwestern Peru from 2015 to 2023. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him to oversee the Vatican office responsible for selecting bishops globally, giving him a significant role in shaping the Church’s leadership.

Presidential Congratulations

President Donald Trump swiftly congratulated Pope Leo XIV, celebrating his election as a historic honor for the United States:

“What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Commitment to Social Justice

Pope Leo XIV’s election comes after the death of Pope Francis last month, who was celebrated for promoting greater openness and social justice. In his brief address, Leo XIV expressed gratitude to his predecessor and pledged to continue the Church’s mission of peace and compassion, focusing on being close to those who suffer.

Prevost’s alignment with Francis’ vision has been well noted, particularly his stance on social justice and welcoming inclusivity. Unlike Pope Francis, who often favored modest attire, Pope Leo XIV chose to wear a traditional red papal garment over his white cassock.

A New Direction

While many cardinals supported the continuity of Francis’ reforms, others favored a return to more traditional practices. Pope Leo XIV’s election reflects a nuanced approach, blending a commitment to modern engagement with elements of tradition.

The last pope to take the name Leo (Pope Leo XIII), who served from 1878 to 1903, was known for his focus on social justice and is credited with influencing modern Catholic social teaching.

Pope Leo XIV’s election has raised expectations that he will pursue a balanced path, promoting social justice while also respecting traditions within the Catholic Church.
