NEW JERSEY — Convicted U.S. Senator Bob Menendez announced Friday that he is withdrawing his independent candidacy for the upcoming November election, bringing an official end to his controversial and storied political career. Menendez had initially planned to run for reelection as an “independent Democrat” if exonerated on corruption charges. However, after being convicted in July of 16 counts of corruption, Menendez opted to resign from the Senate, a decision he has scheduled for this coming Tuesday.
