WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Joe Biden reassured over 20 Democratic governors of his health and political viability during a private meeting on Wednesday evening, addressing concerns that have intensified following last week’s debate with Donald Trump.

Biden’s Medical Checkup

In an hour-long meeting, Biden disclosed he had a recent medical checkup, confirming his good health. This came in response to a governor’s inquiry about his physical condition. The president humorously knocked on wood as he asserted his well-being, according to sources familiar with the discussion.

The meeting, which saw nearly a dozen governors traveling to Washington while others joined virtually, was arranged quickly due to escalating concerns about Biden’s health. Earlier that day, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had avoided direct answers when asked if Biden had been examined post-debate, emphasizing the president’s routine annual physicals.

Concerns and Support from Governors

Two Democratic governors, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico and Janet Mills of Maine, voiced worries over Biden’s ability to secure victory in their states, which he won by significant margins in 2020. Despite these concerns, other governors, including Tim Walz of Minnesota, Wes Moore of Maryland, and Kathy Hochul of New York, expressed their continued support for Biden.

Biden’s Commitment and Strategy

The meeting served multiple purposes: acknowledging Biden’s debate performance, strategizing for the campaign, and rallying support. Biden assured the governors of his determination to stay in the race, admitting that his debate performance suffered due to an overly packed schedule. He expressed a desire to engage more directly with voters through unscripted events and acknowledged the need for improved campaign messaging.

Focus on Economic Issues

The governors advised Biden to prioritize economic issues over foreign policy in his messaging. They also encouraged him to hold more listening sessions in the upcoming weeks and months. Vice President Kamala Harris concluded the meeting with a call for unity among the Democratic leaders.
