President Joe Biden returned to South Carolina, emphasizing the crucial role of Black voters in the state’s Democratic coalition. Headlining the “First-in-the-Nation” celebration dinner, Biden highlighted his administration’s accomplishments for Black Americans and intensified attacks on former President Donald Trump. The visit aims to solidify support among Black voters, seen as vital to Biden’s success in the upcoming primary and the November election.

Biden’s Appreciation for South Carolina

Biden expressed gratitude to South Carolina Democrats, acknowledging their pivotal role in his 2020 comeback. He credited them for his presidency, Kamala Harris’s historic vice presidency, and Trump’s defeat. The visit underlines the significance of the state’s February primary in showcasing Biden’s support among Black voters.

Strong Message to Black Voters

In his speech, Biden emphasized policy accomplishments, including record unemployment and prescription drug savings, showcasing a sharp contrast to his predecessor. The president engaged in a call-and-response with the crowd, repeatedly emphasizing “a promise made, a promise kept.”

Confronting Trump’s Legacy

Biden criticized Trump, addressing his recent mix-up of political figures and condemning past comments about veterans. He passionately defended veterans, contrasting his perspective with Trump’s refusal to visit a U.S. cemetery in Paris for fallen soldiers. Biden labeled Trump’s derogatory remarks about soldiers as unacceptable.

Protesters and Challenges

Amid Biden’s speech, a few protesters interrupted, expressing concerns about the Israel policy and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Despite interruptions, Biden’s message resonated with attendees, receiving a standing ovation. Rep. Dean Phillips, who also spoke at the event, faced challenges as he urged Biden to “pass the torch.”

Campaign Strategy and Investments

Biden’s visit aligns with his campaign strategy to secure early support in South Carolina, emphasizing its role in the diverse Democratic Party. The campaign has invested in on-the-ground aides, surrogates, and advertising, addressing concerns about enthusiasm among Black voters.

Rallying Support for the Primary

Encouraging attendees to organize, mobilize, and vote, Biden highlighted the importance of the February 3 primary. The visit aims to demonstrate the campaign’s commitment to South Carolina and strengthen support among Black voters critical to Biden’s electoral success.
