President Joe Biden took to the podium on Monday to defend his foreign policy record, highlighting his administration’s efforts in navigating a world fraught with challenges. Speaking at the State Department, Biden emphasized that his policies have strengthened America’s alliances and weakened adversaries like China and Russia.
“America is more capable and better prepared than we’ve been in a long, long time,” Biden said. “While our competitors face stiff headwinds, we have the wind at our back.”
A Legacy of Diplomacy and Alliances
Biden’s speech mirrored his first address at the State Department four years ago, where he vowed to center diplomacy and democratic values. Now, as his term nears its end, Biden outlined how his administration’s work has provided the incoming administration a strong foundation to tackle global issues.
He pointed to key achievements such as the NATO alliance’s unity and expansion, the historic Camp David summit between Japan and South Korea, and the AUKUS defense pact. These efforts, Biden said, were vital in countering threats from Russia and China while bolstering security in the Pacific.
Challenges and Criticism
Despite touting successes, Biden’s foreign policy faced significant setbacks. The chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan marked a low point in his presidency, causing his approval ratings to plummet. Although he argued that ending the war was necessary, critics continue to question the administration’s handling of the evacuation.
“It was time to end the war and bring our troops home,” Biden said. “I believe history will reflect that.”
Biden’s Approach to Global Conflicts
With wars ongoing in Ukraine and the Middle East, Biden underscored the importance of maintaining U.S. engagement abroad. He claimed that rogue states like Russia, Iran, and North Korea are banding together out of weakness rather than strength, adding that his administration’s approach has left the U.S. in a better strategic position.
“Throughout my career, I’ve seen tremendous change, but one thing remains true: America leads by the power of our example,” he said.
Preparing the Next Administration
Biden called on the incoming Trump administration to build on his efforts and resist isolationist policies. He stressed the importance of managing relations with China responsibly and maintaining the strong alliances forged during his tenure.
Noting progress in domestic investments and manufacturing, Biden highlighted how these initiatives aim to lessen America’s economic dependence on adversarial nations. “It’s more effective to deal with China alongside our partners than going it alone,” he noted.
The Middle East and Israel-Hamas Conflict
Biden also expressed optimism about a potential hostage deal between Israel and Hamas, underscoring his belief in diplomacy even in challenging circumstances. However, his approach to the conflict has drawn criticism from progressives and Arab-American groups, who argue that his administration has failed to hold Israel accountable.
“We’re on the brink of a proposal that I laid out months ago finally coming to fruition,” he said, reiterating his commitment to persistent diplomacy.
