In a significant primary election in New York, Assemblymember Stefani Zinerman, supported by Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, successfully defended her seat against Eon Huntley, a challenger endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Zinerman secured 53% of the vote, defeating Huntley’s 47%, according to preliminary results from the New York City Board of Elections.

Zinerman emphasized community empowerment in her campaign and downplayed the financial backing she received, stating that the core message to the voters was crucial. Her victory was bolstered by endorsements from prominent figures such as state Attorney General Tish James and significant unions, including 1199 SEIU. Super PACs with interests in real estate and charter schools, along with pro-Israel group Solidarity PAC, also contributed substantially to her campaign.

The election results indicate a pause in the DSA’s recent electoral momentum in Central Brooklyn. While the DSA managed to secure a win with Claire Valdez in another Assembly seat, other DSA-endorsed candidates, including Jonathan Soto in the East Bronx and Rep. Jamaal Bowman in Westchester, faced significant defeats. Bowman’s loss to Westchester County Executive George Latimer was particularly notable.

Despite these setbacks, DSA Assemblymembers Emily Gallagher and Sarahana Shrestha retained their positions, as did Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The election outcomes highlight ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party between more centrist members and the progressive wing represented by the DSA. As Jeffries positions himself for a potential future as House Speaker, maintaining a unified Democratic front appears increasingly important.

Additional Noteworthy Outcomes:

  • Rep. Greg Meeks, a close ally of Jeffries, secured wins for his preferred candidates in several key races in Queens.
  • Former state Sen. Hiram Monserrate’s attempt to return to legislative office was unsuccessful, marking his eighth failed bid since his expulsion from the state Senate.

These results reflect the complex and dynamic landscape of New York politics as candidates and their supporters navigate internal party divisions and broader electoral strategies.
