Andrew Peek, a seasoned national security expert and former official in the first Trump administration, is expected to return as senior director for Europe and Eurasia at the National Security Council (NSC), according to two individuals familiar with the matter. The appointment, while not yet finalized, signals a strategic move by President-elect Donald Trump as he prepares to reenter the White House.

Peek currently serves as the national security adviser to Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.), who is slated to be Trump’s own national security adviser. Peek’s new role would place him at the forefront of shaping U.S. policy toward Russia, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and NATO. Trump has pledged to broker peace in Ukraine shortly after taking office, though specifics of his plan remain unclear.

A Veteran of Foreign Policy and Security

Peek’s previous tenure in the Trump administration included posts at the State Department, focusing on Middle East policy, and at the NSC, managing European issues. His departure from the NSC during the first Trump presidency was reportedly tied to a security investigation. Despite this, a source familiar with his background confirmed his top-secret clearance was never suspended or revoked.

What’s at Stake

If appointed, Peek’s influence will be significant as the administration navigates complex challenges, including tensions with Russia, strengthening NATO alliances, and determining the future of U.S. involvement in Ukraine. Trump’s vision for resolving the Ukraine conflict will likely be shaped by Peek’s input and diplomatic experience.

Neither Peek nor the Trump transition team responded to requests for comment, while CBS News earlier reported Peek’s return to the NSC without specifying his exact role.

Looking Ahead

With Peek’s potential return to the NSC, the Trump administration is signaling a focus on continuity and leveraging experienced figures to manage pressing global challenges. As the transition continues, the role Peek plays in shaping U.S. foreign policy will be closely watched.
