A recent Fox News poll, conducted in partnership with Beacon Research and Shaw & Company Research, has revealed that a majority of Americans disapprove of the government’s handling of border security and support the construction of a border wall on the southern border.
Widespread Dissatisfaction with Current Border Security
Seventy-one percent of registered voters who participated in the survey expressed their disapproval of the current levels of security at the U.S. border, with a majority of Democrats and Biden voters emphasizing the need for stricter border security measures. Notably, 82 percent of independent voters also voiced their dissatisfaction with current border policies.
Strong Support for Border Wall Construction
The poll found that 57 percent of respondents are in favor of constructing a border wall. Among independent voters, 53 percent expressed support for the wall. Additionally, 49 percent of Hispanic voters and 40 percent of Black voters also voiced their approval of building a border wall.
A Shift in Public Opinion
These findings mark a significant shift in public opinion, especially when compared to past polling data. In January 2019, 58 percent of Americans expressed their opposition to expanding the border wall, as per Pew Research data. Similarly, in a February 2019 Gallup poll, 60 percent of Americans were against the border wall.
Border Crisis Challenges the Status Quo
The changing perspective on the border wall comes amid the ongoing challenge of dealing with a massive influx of migrants from Latin America and other regions, who are seeking refuge in the United States due to issues like gang violence, political instability, and economic hardships. The situation has overwhelmed border agents, and cities across the U.S. are grappling with housing and supporting the new arrivals.
Political Implications for the Biden Administration
The border issue has become a political challenge for the Biden administration, which has faced criticism from Democratic state and local officials regarding perceived inaction in addressing the crisis. In response, the administration recently announced the waiver of 26 federal laws and the resumption of border wall construction in parts of Texas, reversing a key campaign promise. This decision prompted criticism from both Democrats and Republicans and led to allegations of hypocrisy.
The Fox News poll was conducted from October 6 to 9, involving 1,007 randomly selected registered voters from a voter file. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points for Democratic and Republican primary voters.
