Zelenskyy Faces Domestic Pressure Over Secret Peace Talks and U.S. Mineral Deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faces rising political pressure at home as opposition lawmakers demand transparency over peace negotiations with Russia and a proposed mineral deal with the United States. The situation highlights growing domestic unrest over perceived secrecy and controversial international proposals.

Opposition Demands Transparency on Peace Talks

Ukrainian lawmakers, especially from the European Solidarity faction led by former President Petro Poroshenko, are demanding President Zelenskyy appear before parliament to explain the details of ongoing peace negotiations. They argue that critical decisions are being made behind closed doors, leaving elected representatives in the dark.

Tensions Over U.S. Peace Proposal

The United States, represented by Vice President JD Vance, has proposed a peace plan that includes freezing the current front lines of the conflict and recognizing Crimea as Russian territory. The plan excludes any security guarantees for Ukraine and would allow Russia to continue operating the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to sell energy to both nations.

Ukrainian Government Pushes Back

Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko publicly rejected the U.S. proposal, calling it a surrender to aggression. She emphasized Ukraine’s unwillingness to recognize the occupation of Crimea or accept a deal without NATO membership or strong security guarantees.

Criticism Over Mineral Deal with U.S.

The opposition is also raising questions about a possible mineral extraction agreement between Ukraine and the U.S. Critics argue the deal could compromise national interests and must be part of a broader transparent peace strategy. They are calling on Zelenskyy to clarify the role of this agreement in the peace process.

Calls for Improved Diplomacy with U.S.

Iryna Gerashchenko, an opposition MP, stressed the need to restore proper diplomatic communication with the Trump administration, which she claims has deteriorated. She criticized Zelenskyy’s team for failing to keep parliament informed, especially on strategic matters with the U.S.

Zelenskyy Focuses on Ceasefire First

President Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine’s priority is to achieve a complete ceasefire before negotiating a final peace agreement. He clarified that the minerals deal is still in draft form and that legal teams are working on terms acceptable to both Kyiv and Washington.

Busy Diplomatic Schedule Delays Response

Zelenskyy has not yet responded directly to the opposition’s demands. His office is currently engaged in diplomatic activities, including talks in London with U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg. The Ukrainian delegation is also preparing for meetings in South Africa, Spain, and Poland, with a potential meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump expected in Italy during Pope Francis’s funeral.
