Write-In Campaign for Biden Triumphs in New Hampshire Democratic Primary

President Joe Biden speaks at Abbotts Creek Community Center during an event to promote his economic agenda in Raleigh, North Carolina, on January 18, 2024.

Despite the Democratic National Committee stripping New Hampshire of its delegates, a surprising turn of events unfolded in the state’s Democratic primary. President Joe Biden emerged victorious in a write-in campaign, surpassing candidates like Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) and self-help author Marianne Williamson.

Unconventional Win Through Write-In Ballots

Voters who inscribed Biden’s name on the ballots outpaced formal candidates, marking a significant win. Notably, Biden chose to bypass the New Hampshire primary due to the DNC’s reshuffling of the nominating calendar, elevating South Carolina. This unexpected result hints at a potential Biden-Trump rematch in the general election.

Biden-Harris Campaign Responds

While the Biden-Harris campaign acknowledged the victory, their focus shifted toward the larger implications. Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez stated, “Tonight’s results confirm Donald Trump has all but locked up the GOP nomination.” The spotlight is now on a potential 2024 face-off between Trump and the only contender to defeat him at the ballot box: Joe Biden.

Pro-Biden Efforts Propel Write-In Success

Pro-Biden initiatives invested substantial resources in the write-in campaign, utilizing digital ads and mailers to guide voters in supporting the president. This strategic move demonstrated a commitment to securing Biden’s presence in the primary, despite his absence from the official ballot.

Phillips’ Unconventional Strategy

Dean Phillips, a formal candidate in the race, took an unconventional approach by attacking Biden from both progressive and conservative angles. Phillips, critical of Biden’s electability, deployed a multi-faceted strategy, emphasizing issues like “Medicare for All,” marijuana legalization, and border security. His ads and those from the pro-Phillips super PAC questioned the integrity of the primary process.
