Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley has declared that she will not seek re-election, signaling a significant shift in the state’s highest court. Bradley, part of the court’s liberal majority, will conclude her term on July 31, 2025, paving the way for a contentious battle over her successor.

The election for Bradley’s vacant seat is scheduled for next April, with former Republican attorney general Brad Schimel already indicating his intention to run. Bradley’s decision to step down adds further intensity to what was already expected to be a heated race.

In her statement, Bradley expressed confidence in her ability to secure another term but emphasized her desire to “pass the torch” after careful consideration.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has seen notable rulings since liberals gained control, including overturning Republican-drawn legislative district maps. Additionally, the court has been called upon to review challenges to a longstanding state law on abortion.

The outcome of the upcoming election will likely have significant implications for the ideological balance of the court and could shape future legal decisions in Wisconsin.
