The White House has declared a new round of student loan debt relief, erasing $7.4 billion in debt for thousands of borrowers. Approximately 277,000 student borrowers will benefit from this relief, with a significant portion directed towards those enrolled in the Biden administration’s new income-driven repayment plan, SAVE.

Breakdown of Relief:

  • $3.6 billion for 206,800 borrowers enrolled in the SAVE program
  • $3.5 billion waived for 65,700 borrowers through administrative adjustments to IDR payments
  • $300 million forgiven for 4,600 borrowers via the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program

Education Undersecretary James Kvaal emphasized that this relief targets borrowers who have diligently made payments on their loans for at least a decade, acknowledging their commitment and providing them with deserved loan forgiveness.

Biden’s Student Debt Relief Efforts:
President Joe Biden’s administration has already canceled approximately $153 billion in debt for 4.3 million borrowers. Biden continues to push for more comprehensive student debt relief, building upon his campaign promises and addressing the needs of millions of borrowers.

New Relief Plan Details:

  • Biden aims to forgive unpaid interest for borrowers whose loan balance exceeds their original borrowed amount.
  • Relief will also extend to borrowers who would have qualified for existing federal programs but did not enroll, as well as those who attended “low-value programs.”
  • The administration is actively working to provide relief to millions of borrowers facing financial hardship.

Biden’s Commitment to Student Debt Cancellation:
Biden reiterated his commitment to addressing the student debt crisis, emphasizing that higher education should be a pathway to the middle class, not a hindrance. Despite challenges and opposition, Biden remains steadfast in his efforts to cancel student debt.

Future Plans:
The Education Department is set to propose new rules for student debt relief in the coming weeks and months. These rules will provide estimates on the number of beneficiaries and associated costs, offering further clarity on the relief measures.
