Vice President Kamala Harris has dismissed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assertion that Ukraine played a role in the recent terrorist attack in Moscow. The attack, which occurred at a concert hall, claimed the lives of at least 133 people. In response to questions regarding Putin’s claim, Harris stated that there is no evidence linking Ukraine to the attack.
No Evidence of Ukrainian Involvement
Harris emphasized that the attack was an act of terrorism and extended condolences to the families of the victims. She reiterated that ISIS-K is believed to be responsible for the deadly incident. Ukrainian officials have vehemently denied any involvement, while the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the attack.
U.S. Government’s Prior Warning
Prior to the attack, U.S. agencies had issued warnings to Russian authorities about the possibility of a terrorist incident targeting large gatherings, including concerts. According to National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson, the U.S. Government had shared information about the planned attack with Russian authorities in accordance with its ‘duty to warn’ policy.
Continued Tensions
Putin’s assertion regarding Ukrainian involvement adds to the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The attack in Moscow represents one of the deadliest incidents on Russian soil in recent years, further escalating geopolitical tensions in the region.
