Emgage Action Endorses Kamala Harris for 2024 Presidential Election Amid Concerns Over Gaza Conflict
Introduction
On Wednesday, Emgage Action, a prominent U.S. Muslim advocacy organization, formally endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, despite ongoing concerns regarding her stance on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The group emphasized that former President Donald Trump posed a more significant threat to their community, particularly with his pledge to reinstate travel restrictions targeting predominantly Muslim countries.
2024 Election Context
As the 2024 presidential race tightens between Harris and Trump ahead of the November 5 election, Arab American and Muslim voters are seen as a crucial demographic in battleground states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. These voters played a pivotal role in President Joe Biden’s narrow victory over Trump in 2020, when thousands of votes from this bloc helped to secure his win.
Criticism of Biden Administration’s Middle East Policies
Muslim advocacy groups, including Emgage Action, have expressed criticism of the Biden administration’s support for Israel in the ongoing Gaza war. Harris, currently serving as vice president, has called for an immediate ceasefire and a deal for the release of hostages, emphasizing that she supports both Israel’s right to defend itself and Palestinians’ right to self-determination. However, many Muslim organizations remain dissatisfied with the administration’s policies.
Emgage Action’s Position
In a statement, Emgage Action CEO Wa’el Alzayat acknowledged that the group does not agree with all of Harris’ policies, particularly regarding the Gaza conflict. Nevertheless, Alzayat stressed that the upcoming election requires “both pragmatism and conviction,” recognizing the need to offer “honest guidance” to Muslim voters facing a difficult choice. The group’s endorsement of Harris reflects their determination to prevent a return to what they describe as Islamophobic and harmful policies under a potential Trump administration.
Previous Support for Biden
In the 2020 election, Emgage Action endorsed President Biden and mobilized approximately 1 million Muslim voters in his favor. The organization’s endorsement of Harris for 2024 follows a similar strategy, focusing on what they view as the imperative of defeating Trump. Harris’ campaign has welcomed the endorsement, recognizing its significance in swing states where Muslim voters may play a decisive role.
Trump’s Response and Campaign Strategy
The Trump campaign has not yet issued a formal response to the endorsement. However, Richard Grenell, former acting director of national intelligence under Trump, stated that the campaign has already organized numerous events with Arab American and Muslim voters in key swing states. Additional outreach efforts are planned, including an event scheduled in Michigan this weekend. Trump has also reaffirmed his intention to reinstate the controversial “travel ban,” which would restrict entry to the U.S. from several Muslim-majority countries—a policy that Biden overturned shortly after taking office in 2021.
Harris’ Endorsements from Other Muslim Groups
While Emgage Action’s endorsement is a significant development, it is not the only Muslim organization to back Kamala Harris. She has also received endorsements from the Black Muslim Leadership Council Fund and the American Muslim Democratic Caucus. However, she did not secure the support of the pro-Palestinian grassroots group Uncommitted National Movement, which recently announced it would not endorse any candidate, including Harris, Trump, or a third-party option.
U.S. Role in the Gaza Conflict
The United States, a close ally of Israel and one of its largest weapons suppliers, has provided extensive military support to Israel since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October. According to U.S. officials, the U.S. has supplied Israel with more than 10,000 2,000-pound bombs and thousands of Hellfire missiles as of June 2023.
Background on the Gaza Conflict
The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israeli communities, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports. In response, Israel’s military initiated a large-scale assault on Gaza, resulting in widespread destruction, displacement of nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, and a humanitarian crisis marked by deadly hunger, disease, and over 41,000 casualties, according to Palestinian health authorities.
