Trump’s Cabinet Confirmations Move Quickly as Senate Republicans Show Strong Support

While there has been some drama, Majority Leader John Thune and other Senate Republicans have marched in lockstep behind President Donald Trump. | Angelina Katsanis/POLITICO

The Senate Republican majority is moving swiftly to confirm Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees, marking a stark contrast from his first administration. With a more unified GOP conference, the Senate is on track to approve some of Trump’s most controversial picks, demonstrating the party’s commitment to supporting the president’s agenda.

A New Era of GOP Cooperation

Unlike in 2017, when Republican senators blocked some of Trump’s key initiatives, the 2025 Senate has taken a different approach. With a 53-seat majority, Senate Republicans have streamlined the confirmation process, pushing through 13 nominees in just three weeks—a pace much faster than in Trump’s first term.

Senate Minority Leader John Thune emphasized the urgency, stating:

“Our goal was to ensure every one of President Trump’s nominees got confirmed with speed and efficiency.”

Key Nominees on the Verge of Confirmation

Among the most controversial confirmations expected this week are:

  • Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence
  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health and Human Services Secretary
  • Kash Patel as FBI Director (expected soon)

Each of these figures has drawn scrutiny, but the GOP remains largely unified, making their confirmations likely. Pete Hegseth was already confirmed as Defense Secretary after a high-stakes Senate vote last month.

Behind-the-Scenes Pressure to Secure Votes

Trump’s influence on the Senate GOP is undeniable. His allies, including Elon Musk, have used social media pressure and private lobbying to keep Republican senators in line. Even Vice President JD Vance has been personally involved in persuading holdouts.

One key example is Sen. Bill Cassidy, who was hesitant about Kennedy’s nomination. However, calls from Senate leaders and White House officials helped shift his stance. A similar strategy was used to secure Sen. Todd Young’s support for Gabbard just before her committee vote.

A Potential Roadblock: Labor Secretary Nomination

The only nominee facing serious Republican resistance is Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Trump’s pick for Labor Secretary. Some GOP senators oppose her pro-union stances, and Democratic support is uncertain.

A Senate hearing this Wednesday will offer insight into her chances, with Bernie Sanders expected to play a significant role in the debate.

Trump’s Influence Over the Senate GOP

Trump’s relationship with the Republican-controlled Senate is far smoother than in his first term. At a recent Mar-a-Lago gathering, he praised the Senate for their efficiency, stating:

“The relationships are very good. We don’t always agree on everything, but we get there.”

Senate leaders, including Thune and Barrasso, have managed to balance Trump’s hardline demands with a structured legislative process. Despite Trump’s calls for recess appointments, Senate Republicans have stuck to traditional confirmation procedures, signaling a disciplined approach.

What’s Next?

The Senate is expected to vote on Gabbard and Kennedy’s confirmations this week. While some moderate Republicans, including Mitch McConnell, may oppose them, the GOP likely has enough votes to push them through. If confirmed, these nominations will solidify Trump’s grip on Washington in his second term.
