Former President Donald Trump’s recent assertion that abortion policy should be determined by individual states post-Roe v. Wade has sparked inquiries regarding the specifics of his approach to managing the complexities of such a transition. Despite his vocal stance on leaving abortion decisions to states, Trump has yet to address key questions regarding executive actions and potential federal interventions related to abortion access. Here are some critical questions posed to the Trump campaign and the notable aspects of their responses:

1. Federal Abortion Ban:

While Trump advocates for state-level decision-making on abortion, he hasn’t ruled out signing a federal ban if it reaches his desk, leaving the possibility open for future legislative actions.

2. FDA Policies on Abortion Pill:

Trump could influence abortion access by directing the FDA to revoke authorization of mifepristone or rolling back policies that expand access to the abortion pill, potentially impacting the availability of the drug.

3. Use of the Comstock Act:

Anti-abortion advocates have suggested reviving the Comstock Act to restrict abortion access. However, Trump has not clarified whether he would utilize this law or similar measures to limit abortion procedures.

4. State Sovereignty on Abortion:

The issue of state sovereignty regarding abortion remains complex, with Democratic-controlled states bolstering abortion access and GOP-controlled states implementing restrictions. Trump’s approach to reconciling these state-level variations remains unclear.

5. Reversal of Biden-Era Policies:

Trump could reverse Biden-era policies on abortion, such as funding restrictions and limitations on fetal tissue research, which could significantly impact abortion access and related healthcare services.

6. Protection of IVF:

Trump expressed support for in vitro fertilization but did not address whether he would support federal protections for IVF, leaving questions about potential legislative actions regarding assisted reproductive technologies.

7. Florida Ballot Measure:

With the Florida Supreme Court’s approval of a ballot measure protecting abortion rights until fetal viability, Trump’s stance on this measure, given his residency in Palm Beach, remains uncertain.

Despite Trump’s assertion of leaving abortion policy to states, unanswered questions surrounding federal intervention and executive actions leave room for speculation about his approach to abortion rights and access.
