BEDMINSTER, New Jersey — During a press conference at his New Jersey golf club on Thursday, former President Donald Trump launched a series of attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, focusing heavily on her economic policies and character. While Trump initially discussed the economy, his remarks quickly shifted to personal critiques, painting Harris as a dangerous radical.
Trump Criticizes Harris’ Economic Plans
Standing beside tables filled with supermarket goods, Trump criticized Harris’ price control proposals, dubbing them a “Maduro plan” in reference to the Venezuelan president. He labeled the Inflation Reduction Act as a “con job” and shared his own claims about inflation on everyday items like baby formula and cereal.
Despite calls from his advisers to stay on topic, Trump diverged from the economy, touching on subjects ranging from windmills killing birds to the weight of electric trucks. He also continued his longstanding attacks on Harris, repeatedly and falsely labeling her as a communist and questioning her suitability for the presidency.
“I think I’m entitled to personal attacks. I don’t have a lot of respect for her,” Trump declared, adding that he was “very angry” with Harris, accusing her without evidence of weaponizing the justice system against him.
No New Policy Proposals, But Bold Claims
During the press conference, Trump did not unveil any new policy initiatives. However, he made sweeping promises about reducing energy and electricity prices by at least 50% within the first year of his administration. Trump also spoke about plans to open federal land for housing construction, claiming it would address the need for affordable housing.
“We desperately need housing for people who can’t afford what’s going on now,” Trump stated, adding that he would eliminate certain restrictions and regulations to prevent costly supply chain disruptions.
Harris Campaign Responds to Trump’s Attacks
In response to Trump’s comments, a spokesperson for Harris’ campaign, James Singer, criticized Trump for opposing efforts to lower food and prescription drug costs. “Trump doesn’t want to defend his agenda,” Singer said, dismissing Trump’s remarks as more of his usual rhetoric.
Despite recent polling showing Harris closing in on Trump, the former president claimed he preferred Harris as an opponent over President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race last month. “I think she’s going to be, in many ways, easier to beat than Joe Biden,” Trump asserted, though his own advisers have reportedly cautioned against underestimating Harris.
Trump Takes Aim at Harris and Walz
Trump also took shots at Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, criticizing an initiative in Minnesota to provide menstrual products in boys’ bathrooms for transgender students. He falsely claimed that “virtually 100% of net job creation” in the past year had gone to migrants, a statement intended to discredit the economic achievements of the Harris-Biden administration.
Trump’s remarks at Bedminster came just before he attended an event with Jewish Republican leaders, where he continued his attacks on Harris, accusing her of pandering to antisemitism within the Democratic Party. “The toxic poison of anti-Semitism now courses through the radical Democrat party,” Trump warned, further inflaming tensions.
