Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday morning to affirm a message of disdain for pop icon Taylor Swift, stating bluntly, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” This follows Swift’s public endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris after Tuesday’s debate, which has reportedly driven over 400,000 people to the Vote.gov website.

Trump Responds to Swift’s Endorsement of Kamala Harris

In a shift from his more dismissive remarks earlier in the week, where he favored Brittany Mahomes, wife of NFL star Patrick Mahomes, over Swift, Trump’s latest post was far more confrontational. During a “Fox and Friends” interview on Wednesday, Trump said he “was not a Taylor Swift fan” and criticized her for endorsing Democratic candidates, predicting she’d “pay a price for it in the marketplace.”

Trump’s aggressive tone on Sunday has sparked a firestorm on social media, particularly among Swifties and Democratic supporters.

Politicians and Fans React

Several politicians, including Tim Walz, Liz Cheney, and Pete Buttigieg, quickly responded to Trump’s attack on Swift. Walz tweeted, “Swifties: With your help, we’re gonna defeat the smallest man who ever lived,” a reference to one of Swift’s songs. Cheney echoed a similar sentiment, calling Trump the “smallest man who ever lived.” Buttigieg humorously compared Trump’s behavior to a TV show reaching its final, over-the-top season.

Swifties, meanwhile, have rallied on X (formerly Twitter) to defend their idol, with many blasting Trump’s post as a political misstep that could cost him support among younger voters. The fan group Swifties For Kamala posted a mock news brief, followed by a call to donate to the Harris-Walz campaign.

Trump’s Strategy: Swift as a Distraction?

Some observers have speculated that Trump’s incendiary post might be an effort to divert attention from Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s controversial remarks on CNN. During an interview with host Dana Bash, Vance admitted that he and Trump had to “create stories about migrants” to get the media to focus on what he described as “the suffering of the American people.”

Regardless of the motivation behind Trump’s post, the backlash from Swift’s fans and Democratic politicians may indicate that the former president’s comments have generated more attention than anticipated—and not in his favor.
