Former President Donald Trump’s campaign removed a video from his Truth Social account featuring the phrase “unified reich” following backlash from the Biden administration and several Republican figures.

The video, posted on Monday, depicted a vision of America under another Trump presidency and included headlines such as “Trump Wins!” and “What’s next for America?” However, controversy arose due to the background text that mentioned “the creation of a unified reich,” a term historically associated with Nazi Germany.Trump Campaign ResponseA Trump campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, stated that the video was reposted by an unwitting staffer who did not notice the term, clarifying that it was not an official campaign video. She further accused President Joe Biden of being the real extremist.Political ReactionsThe video faced immediate criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Prominent Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), condemned the video. Graham suggested that the responsible staffer should be dealt with, while Rounds called the term’s usage inappropriate.Vice President Kamala Harris denounced the video, asserting that extremists are attempting to divide the nation and encouraging xenophobia and hate. President Biden, while campaigning in New Hampshire, did not directly address the controversy but mentioned that his response would be too lengthy.Biden Campaign’s ResponseThe Biden campaign seized the opportunity to raise funds, sending out an email with the subject line “Unified Reich” and emphasizing that Trump’s echoes of Nazi Germany are a serious issue.Historical Context and Previous IncidentsTrump’s Truth Social account has a history of sharing and then deleting controversial posts. In 2022, the account shared conspiratorial messages from a Q-Anon board. Following this incident, the Republican National Committee passed a resolution condemning antisemitism.Democratic PerspectiveJim Demers, a Democratic strategist supporting Biden, stressed the importance of contrasting Biden’s democratic values with Trump’s rhetoric.
