Tim Walz Sidesteps Biden in Vice Presidential Debate as Harris Takes Center Stage

The 2024 vice presidential debate saw Tim Walz distance himself from President Biden, highlighting Kamala Harris as the focus of the Democratic campaign while Republicans shift their attacks to Harris.

During Tuesday’s 2024 vice presidential debate, Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee, all but ignored President Joe Biden’s governing record, focusing instead on his running mate, Kamala Harris. Walz’s minimal references to Biden reflect a significant shift in the political landscape, where the sitting president has faded into the background in just a few months.

Biden Fades into the Background

In a striking moment during the debate, Walz mistakenly referred to the accomplishments of the “Harris administration” before quickly correcting himself to say the “Biden-Harris administration.” This slip underscores how Biden has become a distant figure in the current political conversation, even within his own party.

Earlier in the summer, Walz was defending Biden’s policies, but now he appears to be distancing himself from the president, a move that seems motivated by Biden’s declining approval ratings. In contrast, Walz focused his attacks on JD Vance and, more importantly, defended Harris as the primary face of their campaign.

Vance’s Critique Centers on Harris

JD Vance, Trump’s vice-presidential pick, followed a similar approach. Rather than focusing on Biden’s record, Vance directed his criticism toward Kamala Harris, portraying her as the person responsible for the country’s current state. Over the course of the 90-minute debate, Vance mentioned Biden just a handful of times, only to praise the president for continuing Trump’s pro-worker tariffs.

Vance’s strategy indicates that Republicans have shifted their attacks away from the outgoing president, focusing instead on their new opponent: Vice President Kamala Harris. The political calculus is clear—why attack Biden when Harris is now seen as the Democratic leader heading into the election?

A Stark Shift in Focus

The rapid decline of Biden’s presence in both Democratic and Republican discourse has been swift. As Biden prepares to exit the political stage, both sides seem content to leave him behind. Democrats are focusing on Harris, while Republicans are sharpening their attacks on her.

In fact, the White House did not confirm whether Biden even watched the debate. According to Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, Biden was “very, very busy,” reflecting how the sitting president has increasingly been sidelined in the national conversation.

Conclusion: Biden Becomes a Background Figure

The 2024 vice presidential debate highlighted the changing dynamics of this election. With Biden’s unpopularity looming large, Democrats are strategically moving the spotlight onto Kamala Harris, while Republicans are more than happy to oblige. As the campaign continues, Biden’s role in shaping its direction appears to be diminishing rapidly.
