A recently unsealed court filing suggests that Senator Bob Menendez may attribute actions leading to a federal bribery case against him to his wife, Nadine Menendez. Menendez’s legal team seeks to demonstrate his lack of improper intent by highlighting instances where Nadine allegedly withheld information or led him to believe nothing unlawful was occurring.
The attempt to keep this defense strategy sealed stemmed from concerns about jury pool bias, but a federal judge ordered its release following pressure from media outlets, including POLITICO. Menendez’s defense had argued for separate trials for him and his wife due to spousal privilege complexities.
While Nadine Menendez has been granted a separate trial due to health reasons, the senator’s trial, alongside co-defendants Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, is scheduled to commence on May 6 in Manhattan. However, a potential delay is pending, with prosecutors citing issues involving an attorney for one of the co-defendants.
Nadine Menendez’s trial is slated for later this summer. The case revolves around allegations of Menendez accepting bribes and acting as an unregistered foreign agent, among other charges.
