Tight Race Between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump Ahead of U.S. Presidential Election
Overview
With less than seven weeks until the November 5th U.S. presidential election, polls show Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump locked in a competitive race. National and state-specific surveys indicate a close contest, particularly in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, which is critical to determining the election’s outcome.
National Poll Results
A recent survey conducted by The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Siena College between September 11-16 revealed a tie between Harris and Trump. Among 2,437 likely voters, each candidate received 47% support, with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points, highlighting the close nature of the race.
Pennsylvania Polling
Pennsylvania, one of the most crucial battleground states, also reflects the overall tight competition. In the same NYT/Inquirer/Siena poll, Harris held a slight lead over Trump, with 50% to his 46%. The margin of error in this poll was ±3.8 percentage points, keeping the race within a competitive range.
Similarly, a separate poll by The Washington Post conducted from September 12-16 among 1,003 likely and registered voters in Pennsylvania showed Harris leading Trump by just 1 percentage point, 48% to 47%, within a margin of error of ±3.6 percentage points. Voter motivation in the state remains high, with the majority expressing that protecting American democracy is a key issue.
Key Voter Issues
Voters in these polls identified several critical issues influencing their decision:
- Democracy: Concerns over the preservation of U.S. democracy were central to many voters, with both candidates viewed as capable by a significant portion of the electorate. Harris garnered 48% support for protecting the nation’s freedoms, while Trump received 45%.
- Economy, Abortion, and Immigration: In addition to democracy, voters expressed strong opinions on economic issues, reproductive rights, and immigration policies. Preferences for Harris or Trump on these matters have remained relatively stable.
Broader Battleground Dynamics
Pennsylvania is one of seven pivotal battleground states expected to determine the outcome of the election, alongside Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. The race remains tight in these key regions, with polling results in line with the competitive nature of the national race.
Harris and Trump’s Campaigns
Kamala Harris, a former prosecutor and state attorney general, is working to secure a Democratic victory in the wake of President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Her focus remains on safeguarding democracy, a message resonating with many voters.
Donald Trump, who faces several criminal cases, continues to deny any wrongdoing and maintains his stance that the 2020 election was fraudulent, despite no evidence supporting this claim. His campaign is concentrating on issues such as economic recovery and border security.
