Senior House Democrat Calls for NYC Mayor Eric Adams to Resign

Rep. Jerry Nadler, the most senior New York Democrat in the House of Representatives, has called for Mayor Eric Adams to resign following charges of accepting illegal foreign contributions, wire fraud, and bribery. In a statement shared on social media, Nadler expressed his belief that Adams could no longer effectively lead New York City and urged him to step down while maintaining that Adams is entitled to due process.

Growing Pressure from New York Democrats

Nadler’s call for resignation is echoed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, making them the only two members of the New York Democratic delegation to directly call for Adams to step down. Other New York lawmakers, including Rep. Nydia Velazquez, have voiced concerns over the charges but stopped short of explicitly asking for the mayor’s resignation, with Velazquez stating that the decision was ultimately up to Adams.

Political Reactions to the Indictment

Despite the growing pressure, many prominent Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have refrained from directly calling for Adams’ resignation. Schumer acknowledged the seriousness of the charges but did not go further. Similarly, Rep. Grace Meng expressed her concern over the situation, describing it as a “sad and solemn time” for New York City, but did not demand Adams’ resignation.

Mixed Responses from the Democratic Delegation

While some Democratic candidates in swing districts have supported the call for Adams to resign, a significant portion of New York’s Democratic congressional delegation has taken a more cautious approach. They have emphasized that the legal process should play out before any decisions are made regarding Adams’ position as mayor.

Potential Political Implications

Nadler’s stance may have broader political implications. He is known to have close ties with former New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, who is considering a run for mayor next year. Adams’ indictment and calls for his resignation are likely to influence the dynamics of the upcoming mayoral race.
