Nikki Haley, former United Nations ambassador and South Carolina governor, revealed on Sunday that while she’s willing to campaign for Donald Trump, she hasn’t been asked to do so. During an interview on CBS’ Face the Nation, Haley said she had spoken with Trump in June and let him know she was available if needed.
“He knows I’m on standby,” Haley said. “I talked to him back in June… I’m ready if he ever needs me.”
Despite offering her support, Haley is currently not involved in Trump’s debate preparations or campaign efforts. She emphasized that the decision was Trump’s, stating, “That’s his choice… I told him I was supportive.”
Haley’s Mixed Feelings on Trump’s Candidacy
Haley, who came the closest to challenging Trump for the GOP nomination, has backed Trump’s policies but stopped short of fully endorsing his candidacy. When asked if Trump is a “good candidate,” Haley responded, “If I thought Biden or Trump were great candidates, I wouldn’t have run for president.”
However, Haley made it clear she would support Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris in the general election, citing the impact of policies on her family and the country.
“It’s not a question,” Haley said about her support for Trump, even if she doesn’t always agree with his style. “These are the candidates we have been given.”
Haley’s Role in the GOP
Haley, who endorsed Trump after withdrawing from the Republican primary, has maintained a cautious stance, balancing her support for the GOP with reservations about both Trump and President Joe Biden. Haley’s potential involvement in Trump’s campaign could help unify Republicans ahead of the general election, but as of now, she remains on the sidelines.
