Thousands of Russians gathered in Moscow on Friday to mourn the passing of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, expressing their grievances towards the authorities and demanding accountability for his demise.

Navalny, a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin, passed away at the age of 47 while incarcerated in an Arctic penal colony on February 16. His supporters allege foul play in his death, although the Kremlin has denied any involvement.

During the funeral proceedings at a cemetery near Navalny’s former residence, his parents paid their final respects as mourners, accompanied by a small group of musicians, bid farewell. Amidst prayers and gestures of reverence, Navalny’s coffin was eventually closed, draped in a white shroud.

The funeral drew a large crowd, with attendees clutching flowers and participating in chants expressing dissatisfaction with the current regime and mourning Navalny’s passing. While law enforcement presence was notable, interventions were minimal, although reports indicate several detentions across multiple cities.

Public demonstrations in Russia are infrequent and fraught with risk, particularly amid ongoing tensions surrounding the conflict in Ukraine. Navalny’s demise leaves the country’s opposition in a vulnerable state, with many key figures either imprisoned or in exile.

Despite his incarceration, Navalny remained a symbol of resistance to many, displaying resilience and humor in his interactions with the legal system and on social media. His passing has left supporters grappling with uncertainty about the future of the opposition movement.

Navalny’s funeral was a somber affair, attended by foreign diplomats and marked by a brief service in a church. State media coverage was limited, focusing largely on Navalny’s legal troubles rather than his political activism.

Outside Russia, Navalny’s allies have encouraged supporters to honor his memory through memorials commemorating Soviet-era repression. The Kremlin has warned against unsanctioned gatherings in Navalny’s name, citing legal repercussions for participants.

Navalny’s family, including his wife and children residing outside Russia, did not attend the funeral. In emotional messages shared on social media, his wife and daughter paid tribute to his legacy and pledged to continue his work.

Navalny, a former lawyer, gained prominence for his vocal opposition to Putin’s government, organizing protests and exposing alleged corruption within the ruling elite. His return to Russia in 2021 following a poisoning incident led to his immediate arrest and subsequent imprisonment.

As of now, President Putin has refrained from commenting on Navalny’s passing, maintaining a longstanding practice of avoiding direct reference to the opposition leader.
