Nadine Menendez, the wife of Sen. Bob Menendez, has requested a delay for their upcoming corruption trial due to health concerns. In a court filing on Tuesday, attorneys representing Nadine Menendez petitioned Judge Sidney Stein to postpone the trial scheduled for May 6, citing an undisclosed “serious medical condition.”

According to the filing, Nadine Menendez requires a “surgical procedure” and subsequent medical treatment, rendering her unable to assist her counsel in trial preparations over the next four weeks. Furthermore, her attorneys emphasized that she would not be physically or psychologically fit to participate in a six-week trial beginning on May 6, 2024.

David Schertler, one of Nadine Menendez’s attorneys, stated in the legal document, “Given her medical circumstances, Ms. Menendez is not able to assist her counsel in preparing for trial in the next four weeks.”

The corruption case involves allegations against Bob Menendez, accusing him of leveraging his political position to benefit foreign governments and New Jersey business figures in exchange for monetary payments, gold bars, and luxury vehicles. Nadine Menendez is also implicated, allegedly receiving mortgage payments for their home and holding a low- or no-show job in return for favors facilitated by her husband. Both individuals have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Recently, Nadine Menendez’s legal representatives sought permission to withdraw from representing her in the case. Meanwhile, Bob Menendez has indicated that he may explore an independent candidacy for Senate reelection once he is “exonerated” from the allegations leveled against him.

The request for a trial delay underscores the significance of Nadine Menendez’s health concerns and raises questions about the potential impact on the legal proceedings moving forward.
