Vice President Kamala Harris strongly condemned political violence following an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on Sunday. In a statement issued from her office, Harris expressed concern and called for peace in the wake of the incident.
“As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence,” Harris said. She also noted that she was “deeply disturbed” by the possible assassination attempt.
Secret Service Foils Attempt on Trump’s Life
Earlier on Sunday, local authorities reported that Secret Service agents protecting Trump opened fire on a suspect armed with an AK-style rifle near the property line of the former president’s Florida golf course in West Palm Beach. The incident, now being investigated as an attempted assassination, marks the second attempt on Trump’s life in two months.
Federal authorities are conducting a thorough investigation, and a suspect is currently in custody. President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris were both briefed on the situation shortly after it unfolded.
Harris and Biden Praise Secret Service Response
Both Harris and Biden expressed relief that Trump was unharmed. “I am thankful that former President Trump is safe. I commend the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement partners for their vigilance,” Harris said.
In his statement, President Biden echoed the vice president’s sentiments, noting the administration’s commitment to supporting the Secret Service. “There is no place for political violence in our country, and I have directed my team to ensure that the Secret Service has every resource necessary to protect the former president,” Biden said.
No Room for Political Violence
Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of rejecting violence in political discourse. Harris urged all Americans to take responsibility for maintaining peace, emphasizing that political differences should never escalate to violence.
The incident has raised concerns about the rising levels of political tension in the country, prompting leaders from both parties to speak out against the normalization of political violence.
