Israel has issued calls for Palestinian residents in additional areas of Gaza’s southern city of Rafah to evacuate and relocate to what it terms an expanded humanitarian zone in Al-Mawasi. This development suggests a potential advancement in the military’s preparations for a ground operation in Rafah.
A military spokesperson conveyed these directives via a post on the social media platform X. Residents and displaced individuals in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza, along with 11 other neighborhoods in the region, were also urged to promptly seek refuge in shelters located west of Gaza City. According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple areas in central Gaza overnight, resulting in the loss of 24 Palestinian lives.
Despite significant pressure from the United States and expressions of concern from local residents and humanitarian organizations, Israel has affirmed its intention to proceed with an incursion into Rafah. This city has become a refuge for over 1 million displaced individuals during the ongoing seven-month-long conflict.
Israel’s military reports that approximately 300,000 Gazans have relocated towards Al-Mawasi. The rationale provided by Israeli authorities for this military action is the necessity to eliminate what they perceive as thousands of Hamas fighters entrenched in Rafah.
On Friday, Israeli tanks seized control of the main thoroughfare dividing Rafah’s eastern and western sectors, effectively encircling the eastern portion in a maneuver that prompted Washington to delay certain military aid deliveries to its ally.
While the White House has expressed concern over Israeli operations, it characterized them as localized around the closed Rafah crossing and not indicative of a large-scale invasion of the city.
The conflict was sparked by a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel, resulting in casualties and hostage-taking, according to Israeli accounts.
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, purportedly aimed at dismantling Hamas, has resulted in significant Palestinian casualties, with Gaza’s health ministry reporting close to 35,000 fatalities. The sustained bombardment has inflicted widespread destruction on the coastal enclave and precipitated a severe humanitarian crisis.
The Biden administration, while acknowledging Israel’s use of U.S.-supplied weaponry, has raised concerns that such deployment may have infringed upon international humanitarian law during the Gaza operation. However, the administration has refrained from issuing a definitive assessment, citing challenges in verifying specific instances amidst the chaos of war.
