Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled his party’s election strategy ahead of the country’s upcoming general election. Modi, seeking a third five-year term, outlined plans to bolster social spending, enhance infrastructure, and position India as a global manufacturing hub amidst shifts away from China. The promises, presented by leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, include expanding social programs, providing free homes for the poor, healthcare, cooking gas, and free grain distribution.
Modi emphasized his government’s achievements in poverty alleviation, claiming to have lifted 250 million people out of poverty since assuming office in 2014. Despite these pledges, opposition parties, particularly the Congress Party, have criticized Modi’s governance, alleging erosion of democratic principles and favoritism towards the wealthy.
With elections scheduled from April 19 to June 1, and results to be announced on June 4, polls indicate a likely victory for Modi and the BJP. However, critics caution against further BJP rule, citing concerns over secularism, minority rights, and freedom of expression.
Modi’s vision extends to economic growth targets, aiming to propel India’s economy to $5 trillion by 2027 and positioning it as a developed nation by 2047. To achieve these goals, Modi pledges to focus on industries such as pharmaceuticals, energy, semiconductors, and tourism, while prioritizing infrastructure modernization and job creation, particularly for young people.
While Modi enjoys widespread popularity for his economic policies and advocacy for the Hindu majority, his tenure has also faced criticism for alleged marginalization of minorities and curtailment of dissent. As India prepares for another pivotal election, the debate over the country’s future trajectory continues to intensify.
