Education Secretary Miguel A. Cardona has addressed concerns about antisemitism on college campuses, labeling threats against Jewish students as “abhorrent” and “unacceptable.” Speaking before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee regarding the Education Department’s budget requests, Cardona emphasized the department’s commitment to investigating over 130 complaints of harassment reported since October 7.

Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, the Education Department is tasked with enforcing prohibitions against discrimination based on “race, color, or national origin” in federally funded institutions. Cardona assured lawmakers that the Office for Civil Rights is actively investigating the complaints it has received, acknowledging the seriousness of the issue and the impact it has on Jewish students’ sense of safety on campuses.

However, some Republican members of the subcommittee expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the investigations, suggesting more immediate punitive measures such as withholding federal funds from non-compliant institutions. Cardona affirmed the department’s authority to take such actions if necessary.

While Cardona did not provide specifics on the ongoing investigations, it is likely that they encompass a range of complaints related to antisemitism as well as other forms of harassment targeting various student populations.

The issue of antisemitism on college campuses has garnered increased attention amid recent protests over the conflict in Gaza. While Republicans have highlighted threats against Jewish students, Cardona emphasized the broader context of campus safety and the need to address discrimination against students of all backgrounds.

As campus administrators navigate the complexities of enforcing campus codes and balancing students’ freedoms with safety considerations, the Education Department continues to emphasize the importance of combating discrimination and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
