NEW YORK — Donald Trump will no longer participate in CBS’s traditional election special on “60 Minutes,” the network announced Tuesday. Trump’s team had initially agreed to the interview but later pulled out, citing disagreements over the format, specifically the network’s request for live fact-checking during the interview.
Trump Campaign Cites Unprecedented Demands
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, clarified that while there were initial discussions with CBS, “nothing was ever scheduled or locked in.” He further explained that CBS’s insistence on live fact-checking was unprecedented and contributed to the decision to cancel the interview.
CBS News, however, stated that Trump’s team had initially accepted the interview offer, which was followed by an acceptance from Vice President Kamala Harris. Both candidates were to be given two equal segments on the broadcast. After Trump’s team notified CBS on Tuesday of their withdrawal, the network confirmed that Harris’ interview would still air as planned.
Trump Demands Apology from CBS
When asked about the situation during a press conference in Milwaukee, Trump said he was “waiting for an apology” from CBS. He referred to past reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop and crime rates, expressing frustration with the network’s coverage.
“I wouldn’t mind doing the interview,” Trump said, noting that he had been interviewed twice by the late Mike Wallace, a former “60 Minutes” correspondent. However, he reiterated that an apology from CBS was a prerequisite for his participation.
CBS Responds to the Decision
A CBS News representative, speaking anonymously, reiterated that for over half a century, “60 Minutes” has extended invitations to both Democratic and Republican candidates as a customary part of election coverage. They confirmed that Scott Pelley was set to interview Trump for the special.
CBS further stated that Pelley will address the Trump campaign’s decision to back out of the interview during the upcoming special, which will air on Monday at 8 p.m. Harris’ segment will still be featured, giving her the sole spotlight in the election special.
A Missed Opportunity for Trump
With the 2024 election approaching, Trump’s absence from such a high-profile interview is significant. “60 Minutes” is known for its large viewership, especially during election season, and this would have been a crucial moment for Trump to make his case to voters. Whether Trump’s decision to skip the interview will impact his campaign remains to be seen.
