President Joe Biden is gaining ground on former President Donald Trump in the latest New York Times/Siena College poll, indicating a narrowing gap between the two candidates as the 2024 elections draw nearer.

According to the poll released on Saturday, Trump, who previously held a four-point lead over Biden in February, now finds himself in a much tighter race, with both candidates polling nearly neck-and-neck among likely voters. Trump stands at 47 percent, while Biden follows closely at 46 percent.

The poll suggests that Biden’s recent increase in support may stem from a consolidation of the Democratic base, with 90 percent of his 2020 voters expressing their intention to reelect him, up from 85 percent in February. Conversely, Trump has seen a slight decline in support from his base, dropping from 97 percent to 94 percent over the same period.

Despite Biden’s gains, the poll reflects widespread frustration with the president’s performance, with 47 percent of respondents strongly disapproving of his record in office, consistent with February’s findings.

Both candidates continue to struggle with popularity among voters, with Biden’s net favorability rating inching up one point to 42 percent, while Trump remains steady at 44 percent.

The poll, conducted from April 7-11 with 1,059 registered voters, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percent for likely voters.

The tightening race underscores the high stakes of the upcoming election and the deeply polarized political landscape in the United States. As the candidates vie for support, their ability to address voter concerns and mobilize their respective bases will be critical factors in determining the outcome of the election.
