Biden and Netanyahu Discuss Potential Cease-Fire as Israel and Hamas Near Agreement

President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hamas in a phone call on Thursday. According to a senior administration official, Hamas has shown a willingness to move closer to accepting a multi-phase cease-fire deal proposed by Israel.

The proposed deal aims to achieve several key objectives over time: the release of hostages, cessation of hostilities, and the beginning of reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip. Although significant issues remain, particularly regarding the implementation of the cease-fire, the White House believes there is a substantial opportunity to finalize the agreement.

Negotiations have been challenging, primarily due to Hamas’ demand for an immediate and complete Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza, and Israel’s insistence on retaining the ability to resume military operations against Hamas if necessary. The Biden administration has actively involved regional intermediaries Egypt and Qatar to exert pressure on Hamas and facilitate the agreement.

The breakthrough in talks comes after months of stalled negotiations following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, which led to hostages being taken and ongoing conflict in Gaza. Biden has urged the Israeli government to advance the deal, arguing that Hamas now poses a reduced threat to Israel’s security.

While a final agreement is not expected immediately, the discussions between Biden and Netanyahu reflect a significant step towards a potential cease-fire and a path to peace in the region.
