In a recent development, North Carolina GOP Chair Michael Whatley officially announced his candidacy for the position of Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair. The announcement follows the news of current RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel’s decision to step down from her post early next month.
In a letter addressed to the RNC’s 168 members, obtained by POLITICO, Whatley emphasized the endorsement he received from former President Donald Trump, who is considered the frontrunner for the GOP nomination. Whatley expressed his gratitude for Trump’s support and aims to secure votes as the party gears up for the crucial task of winning elections at all levels in 2024.
Former President Trump has been actively involved in reshaping the leadership of the RNC, endorsing Whatley for the chair position, Lara Trump for co-chair, and Chris LaCivita as RNC’s chief operating officer. The election for the new RNC Chair is scheduled for March 8 in Houston.
In his letter, Whatley outlined his vision for the committee, emphasizing the need for a laser-focused approach on voter registration, encouraging voter turnout, and maximizing opportunities to secure victories in key states. He also committed to pursuing objectives aligned with Trump’s priorities, including aggressive litigation when necessary and recruiting and training poll watchers and workers.
Whatley’s previous role as the RNC’s general counsel played a role in securing Trump’s support, with a particular focus on “election integrity” issues. Whatley shared the stage with Trump at his South Carolina victory party on Saturday evening.
The RNC Chair election will require Whatley to secure a majority of support from RNC members, a task that seems likely given Trump’s widespread backing among the members. The reshaping of RNC leadership underscores Trump’s influence within the party and his focus on key issues such as election integrity.
