In a remarkable turn of events, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis took the witness stand on Thursday to address accusations of a conflict of interest in the Trump criminal case. Willis, the lead prosecutor in the high-stakes case against Donald Trump and several co-defendants related to efforts to subvert the 2020 presidential election, faced combative questioning regarding her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.
Tense Exchanges in the Courtroom
Defense attorneys accused Willis of benefiting improperly from the case, claiming that Wade financed vacations with her using income from his work on the investigation. The defense argued that this situation presented a conflict of interest. Willis vehemently denied the allegations, stating, “I’m not on trial, no matter how hard you try to put me on trial.”
Willis’ choice to testify was unusual, given that Judge Scott McAfee may not have required her testimony. If Willis were removed from the prosecution, her entire office would be disqualified, potentially disrupting or derailing the case.
Deeply Personal Testimony
During her testimony, Willis shared personal details about her relationship history, vacations, and financial transactions. She discussed her travels in 2021, her preference for Grey Goose vodka, and her father’s advice to keep cash at home. Willis also detailed her breakup with Wade in August 2023, around the same time she secured the grand jury racketeering indictment against Trump and co-defendants.
The courtroom witnessed prickly exchanges between Willis and defense attorneys, with Judge McAfee warning her twice to stick to answering questions directly.
Contradictory Testimony from Witnesses
Earlier in the hearing, witness Robin Yeartie contradicted claims that Willis and Wade’s romantic relationship began in 2022. Yeartie testified that she observed a romantic relationship between them as early as November 2019, prompting McAfee to order Wade to testify.
Wade, who had a contract with Willis’ office since November 2021, faced questions about the timeline of his relationship with Willis and the financing of their vacations. Wade insisted that their romantic involvement began in March 2022, after he joined the Trump probe.
Ongoing Legal Battle
The hearing ended on Thursday with Willis’ testimony. She is expected to return to the stand on Friday morning. The defense has accused Wade of misleading the court by denying his pre-existing relationship with Willis. The proceedings shed light on the personal dynamics of the legal team and the intense scrutiny surrounding the Trump case.
