Vice President Kamala Harris voiced her support for striking dockworkers on Wednesday, while criticizing Donald Trump’s labor policies. As workers from the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) initiated a work stoppage across the East and Gulf Coasts, Harris highlighted the need for fair compensation amid record profits for foreign-owned shipping companies.

In a statement, Harris emphasized the contrast between her stance and Trump’s record, accusing the former president of blocking overtime benefits and appointing anti-union figures to the National Labor Relations Board. She also pointed to Trump’s recent statement that striking workers should be fired, drawing a clear line between their views on labor rights.

Trump, who has often positioned himself as an advocate for American workers, responded to the strike by blaming Harris’ economic policies. He pointed to inflation driven by what he called “massive, out-of-control spending” under Harris and accused her of contributing to the conditions that led to the strike.

Battle for Union Voters

The strike has become a political flashpoint, as both Harris and Trump vie for the support of union voters—a crucial group in battleground states like Pennsylvania and Michigan. While union leadership typically supports Democrats, Trump has found success in peeling away portions of the rank-and-file membership by leveraging his image as a successful businessman who can manage the economy. Harris, however, has been gaining ground in public opinion polls on economic competence, especially after President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race.

Prominent Democrats, including Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, are rallying behind the striking dockworkers. Moore joined workers at the Port of Baltimore, standing in solidarity and calling for fair treatment. His recent advocacy on behalf of dockworkers, including efforts to secure cash assistance after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, underscores his commitment to supporting labor rights.

Economic Stakes

As the strike continues, there is concern about the potential economic fallout. Prolonged disruptions could lead to price increases and commodity shortages, which might undermine Harris’ progress in gaining voter trust on economic issues. With 35 days until Election Day, both candidates are keenly aware that union voters could play a pivotal role in the outcome, making this strike a critical moment in the campaign.
