The 2024 vice-presidential debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz ended in a complete tie, with voters evenly split on who won. According to a POLITICO/Focaldata snap poll conducted right after the debate, 50% of likely voters chose Vance, while the other 50% sided with Walz. This outcome highlights the deep political polarization as the nation heads into one of the most tightly contested presidential elections in years.

Party Loyalty Shapes Debate Reactions

When asked who won the debate, respondents largely stuck to their party lines. Democrats overwhelmingly supported Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor, while Republicans backed Ohio Senator JD Vance. Despite this, Walz outperformed Vance among independents, with 58% of independent voters choosing him over Vance, who garnered 42% of their support.

Walz saw strong support from younger voters, those with college degrees, and Black and Latino voters. These groups were crucial in Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. On the other hand, Vance performed best with older voters, particularly those over 55, as well as white voters and people without a college education.

Divided Opinions on Readiness for Office

The debate also addressed the readiness of each candidate to step into the role of president if needed. Among those who watched the debate, 51% said they believed JD Vance would be ready to serve as president if Donald Trump were unable to complete his term. Meanwhile, 48% of viewers thought Tim Walz was prepared to take over if Kamala Harris could not complete hers.

However, the debate improved public perceptions of Vance more than it did for Walz. Prior to the debate, only 34% thought Vance was ready to serve as president, a number that jumped after his performance.

Independent Voters Hold the Key

While both men and women were equally split on who won the debate, independents leaned toward Walz. Despite his advantage, many independent voters admitted they did not watch the debate, indicating a challenge for Democrats hoping to rely on this key demographic. Among those who did watch, 44% thought Walz would be a better vice president, while 36% sided with Vance.

Conclusion: A Divided Nation

The 2024 vice-presidential debate ended without a clear winner, reflecting the broader division in the country. Both JD Vance and Tim Walz have strengths with their base, but the real test will come in the final weeks of the election. With a nation so deeply divided, every vote will count.
