Doctors are increasingly aligning with Kamala Harris’ campaign, with many contributing financially and raising awareness about the potential dangers they see in a second Donald Trump administration. As the 2024 election cycle unfolds, physicians are giving nearly twice as much to Democrats as to Republicans, driven by concerns about healthcare policies and public health under another Trump presidency.

Physicians Back Kamala Harris, Citing Healthcare Concerns

Many doctors supporting Harris view their involvement in politics as a moral obligation, pointing to how elections directly impact public health. Dr. Suhas Gondi, an internal medicine resident, emphasized that health and politics are deeply connected, making it difficult to stay apolitical. The strong support from the medical community marks a significant shift, as doctors traditionally leaned Republican up until the early 2000s.

Concern Over Public Trust in Healthcare

While some doctors view political involvement as essential, others worry about the potential consequences for public trust in healthcare. Dr. John Mandrola, a Kentucky cardiologist, expressed concerns about how political advocacy might harm the doctor-patient relationship, arguing that patients may lose faith in their physicians if they perceive them as partisan.

Despite these concerns, many healthcare professionals supporting Harris believe the stakes are too high to remain neutral. They see advocating for science-based policies and the freedom to practice medicine as more important than trying to stay politically neutral.

Fundraising and Political Activism Surge

Harris’ campaign has galvanized healthcare providers, with nearly 1,600 doctors signing up for a recent virtual event hosted by Health Care Providers for Kamala Harris, raising over $100,000. Harris has encouraged physicians to use their trusted status in society to promote her campaign and highlight the dangers of a Trump-led government, especially in areas like reproductive rights and gender-affirming care.

Shift in Doctors’ Political Support

Doctors’ support for Harris is part of a broader political shift that accelerated during Trump’s 2016 campaign and was further amplified by his administration’s handling of COVID-19. In the 2020 election, physicians donated an unprecedented $129 million to Democrats and only $62 million to Republicans. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade also spurred doctors to become more politically active, with many seeing the protection of reproductive health as a critical issue in the upcoming election.

Political Polarization in Medicine

While many doctors align with Harris and Democrats, others, particularly those supporting conservative policies, warn of the risks of doctors openly engaging in political discourse. Rep. Greg Murphy, a North Carolina urologist and co-chair of the GOP Doctors Caucus, cautioned against undermining the integrity of the doctor-patient relationship by mixing medicine with politics.

Despite these warnings, the trend of doctors supporting progressive policies is growing. The American Medical Association (AMA) has shifted in recent years, calling for decriminalization of drug use, advocating for peace in Palestine and Israel, and opposing the death penalty. This growing activism reflects the broader political changes within the medical profession.

Conclusion: Doctors’ Political Engagement Faces Mixed Reactions

As doctors increasingly engage in political advocacy, particularly in support of Kamala Harris, the profession grapples with balancing public trust and political activism. While some believe it’s essential to stand up for policies that benefit public health, others warn of potential damage to the trust that patients place in their doctors. With healthcare on the ballot in 2024, this debate is likely to continue.
