ATLANTA — Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance urged Democrats to “cut this crap” and reduce inflammatory rhetoric in his first public appearance following a second possible assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition in Atlanta, Vance stressed the need for political calm, accusing the left of escalating dangerous tensions.

Vance’s remarks focused on the two recent assassination attempts targeting Trump, contrasting that with the absence of similar incidents aimed at Vice President Kamala Harris. “I’d say that’s pretty strong evidence that the left needs to tone down the rhetoric and needs to cut this crap out,” Vance said, warning that such hostility could lead to more violence and further division in the country.

The incident Vance referred to involved Ryan Routh, 58, who was arrested near Trump’s Florida golf course with an AK-47 rifle and other suspicious items. While authorities continue to investigate Routh’s motives, the arrest has ignited fresh debate over political violence. Vance used the opportunity to call for a reduction in “ridiculous and inflammatory” discourse, acknowledging that the GOP isn’t always perfect but claiming the left’s rhetoric poses greater danger.

Trump’s Allies Blame Democrats

Vance’s comments come amid a broader push by Trump’s allies to blame Democrats for fostering an environment of hostility. Trump himself accused Harris and President Joe Biden of inciting violence, stating that their rhetoric “is causing me to be shot at.” Other Republicans, including Dan Scavino, echoed these sentiments, placing responsibility on the left for the continued attempts on Trump’s life.

Toning Down Rhetoric

Vance, known for his past controversial remarks, took a more measured approach this time, pledging to tone down rhetoric himself. However, he emphasized the importance of maintaining the right to free speech and pushed back against any form of censorship. “Dissent, even vigorous dissent, is a great tradition of the United States. Censorship is not,” Vance said, urging Americans to reject censorship as a way to reject political violence.

Despite his calls for calm, Vance has faced criticism for fueling rumors about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, which some claim led to a spate of bomb threats in the area. Vance dismissed these accusations, instead blaming the media for sensationalizing the situation and ignoring other critical issues like rising murder rates and what he described as the failures of Harris’s leadership.

Harris Responds

In the aftermath of the potential assassination attempt, Harris condemned political violence in a statement, expressing her disturbance over the incident. Her campaign has yet to respond directly to Vance’s remarks.

Vance concluded his speech with a promise to continue defending free speech, even when it involves contentious issues, and reiterated the need for a more civil and restrained political environment.
