Canadian Lawmakers Demand Trump Apologize Over Trudeau-Castro Conspiracy

The Canadian officials have called for an apology, stating the comments are offensive and politically harmful.

Trump Revives Trudeau-Castro Conspiracy Theory

Former President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy, this time by reviving a debunked conspiracy theory about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his new book, Save America. Trump falsely claims that Trudeau is the son of former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, a rumor that has long been denied and debunked by Canadian officials. The theory centers on the personal life of Trudeau’s mother, Margaret, and has been a persistent but baseless story.

Canadian Politicians Demand Apology

In response to Trump’s claims, two former Canadian Cabinet ministers, Lloyd Axworthy and Allan Rock, have demanded that the former U.S. president apologize and retract the comments from his book. Axworthy, a former foreign minister under Trudeau’s father, Pierre Trudeau, labeled the claim as “vile” and “deeply offensive.” Both politicians see Trump’s remarks as a clear attempt to politically undermine Justin Trudeau.

Canadian Officials’ Concerns

Axworthy and Rock addressed a letter to Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence, as well as to the U.S. and Canadian ambassadors. The former lawmakers fear that the conspiracy theory could cause political damage if left unaddressed. Although they do not expect Trump to apologize, they hope that diplomatic pressure might lead to the removal of the passage from the book.

Impact on U.S.-Canada Relations

The incident has raised concerns about the potential diplomatic implications of Trump’s comments. While current Canadian officials, including Prime Minister Trudeau, have refrained from commenting on the U.S. presidential race, the revival of this conspiracy theory could strain U.S.-Canada relations. Trudeau’s administration is focused on securing Canada’s economic interests, particularly as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) undergoes review after the 2024 U.S. election.

Political Undermining and Diplomatic Norms

Axworthy emphasized that Trump’s actions violate an “unwritten rule” of diplomacy, where leaders typically avoid interfering in the political affairs of foreign countries. He also expressed concerns about Trump’s growing lack of restraint, as evidenced by similar conspiracy theories that the former president has promoted.
