Pope Francis Condemns Deaths of Palestinian Children in Gaza
On Friday, Pope Francis condemned the deaths of Palestinian children in Gaza as a result of Israeli military strikes, criticizing the bombing of schools on the “presumption” that they were targeting Hamas militants. “When you see the bodies of killed children, under the presumption that some guerrillas are there, a school is bombed. This is ugly,” the Pope said.
Ongoing War Between Israel and Hamas
Speaking on his flight back to Rome after a 12-day tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania, the 87-year-old pontiff expressed doubt that either Israel or Hamas were taking steps to end the conflict, which has been ongoing for 11 months. He lamented the heavy toll of the war, stating, “Sometimes I think it’s a war that is too much.” The war, triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack that killed around 1,200 people and saw 250 taken hostage, has led to an extensive Israeli military response. Gaza’s health ministry reports over 41,000 Palestinian deaths as a result of the Israeli strikes.
Vatican’s Ceasefire Call and Criticism of U.S. Political Figures
Pope Francis reiterated his support for a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. During the 40-minute press conference, the Pope also briefly criticized the policies of former U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Without elaborating, he noted that U.S. Catholics would need to “choose the lesser evil” when voting in the upcoming elections.
Vatican’s Deal with China on Bishops
In other remarks, Pope Francis expressed optimism about the 2018 Vatican agreement with China concerning the appointment of Catholic bishops. The deal, set for renewal this fall, has allowed China some input into the selection process of bishops, while the Pope retains final decision-making authority. Despite criticisms from conservative Catholics, the Pope stated, “I am happy with the dialogue with China.”
Clarifications on Paris Visit and Potential Trip to Argentina
The pontiff also clarified rumors about a possible visit to Paris in December for the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral, firmly denying he would attend. Additionally, Pope Francis is still considering a visit to his home country, Argentina, although no decision has been finalized. He also mentioned the possibility of visiting the Canary Islands to address issues related to the ongoing migrant crisis.
Addressing Clergy Abuse and the Case of Abbe Pierre
The Pope was questioned about allegations of sexual abuse by the late French priest Abbe Pierre, who was long celebrated for his charitable work with the homeless but faced accusations from at least seven women. Additional testimonies were disclosed in September 2023 by the organization Pierre founded, Emmaus. Pope Francis said he was unsure when the Vatican first became aware of the allegations but confirmed that any knowledge likely came after the priest’s death in 2007.
