Increased Security at German NATO Base Due to Sabotage Threat

The Geilenkirchen NATO air base in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, heightened its security to the second-highest level on Friday following intelligence about a potential Russian sabotage attempt. According to German security sources, a foreign intelligence service provided a “serious indication” that Russia was preparing an act of sabotage, possibly involving drones.

Response to the Threat

Upon receiving the intelligence, the base took immediate precautions by sending all non-essential personnel home to minimize risk. However, the base maintained its normal air traffic operations, and no incidents were reported. By Friday afternoon, the security level was lowered as the situation was deemed stable.

Historical Context of Sabotage Threats in Germany

This alert follows a series of recent sabotage threats across Germany. Earlier, the Geilenkirchen base and another military base near Cologne were sealed off due to concerns over potential water-supply sabotage. In June, Russian saboteurs set fire to a metal factory in Berlin, aiming to disrupt critical weapon and ammunition shipments to Ukraine.

Strategic Importance of Geilenkirchen NATO Base

The Geilenkirchen air base plays a crucial role in NATO’s operations, especially in monitoring airspace in the alliance’s eastern theater. With a workforce of approximately 1,600 people, the base’s radar system can detect and identify aircraft over 400 kilometers away, making it a significant asset in NATO’s defense infrastructure.
