Last year, as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis prepared to announce his presidential candidacy, his senior aides debated the best approach. While some envisioned a rally at a Tampa baseball stadium, campaign manager Generra Peck had a different plan in mind—an audio-only event with Elon Musk on Twitter Spaces. Unfortunately, the decision backfired when technical glitches marred the announcement, leading to a less-than-stellar start for DeSantis’ campaign.
Now, Peck and Musk are collaborating again, but this time for America PAC, a super political action committee dedicated to electing Donald Trump in 2024. Trump’s campaign has outsourced key functions like paid canvassing and get-out-the-vote efforts to outside groups like America PAC, following new guidance from the Federal Election Commission. However, the reliance on untested groups raises questions about the effectiveness of this strategy.
America PAC’s Role in the 2024 Election
America PAC is tasked with identifying and mobilizing Trump supporters in key states through door-to-door canvassing and digital outreach. This approach, especially Musk’s involvement, has attracted significant attention, given his vocal support for Trump and conservative voices on the platform formerly known as Twitter, now rebranded as X.
Musk has denied reports of committing $45 million monthly to pro-Trump efforts but has emphasized the PAC’s commitment to meritocracy and individual freedom. Despite this, the effectiveness of Musk’s foray into politics remains questionable, as both the DeSantis and Trump announcements on Twitter Spaces were marred by technical issues.
Peck’s Influence and America PAC’s Future
Peck, who was demoted during DeSantis’ campaign, has maintained a close relationship with Musk, managing communications with him and handling America PAC’s strategic direction. The PAC recently replaced several vendors with firms linked to Phil Cox, a former DeSantis aide and Peck’s business partner. This consolidation of leadership within the PAC underscores Peck’s significant influence.
However, despite her efforts, Musk has not yet been listed in Federal Election Commission records as a donor to DeSantis’ campaign or Never Back Down, the super PAC supporting DeSantis. This raises questions about the long-term impact of Musk’s involvement in the 2024 election.
Can America PAC Sway the 2024 Election?
While canvassing and voter outreach are critical components of a campaign, some strategists argue that the importance of the ground game can be overstated. Mark Campbell, who managed Glenn Youngkin’s successful Virginia gubernatorial campaign, believes that Musk’s involvement is “collateral noise,” and that the candidates themselves will ultimately determine the election’s outcome.
As the 2024 election heats up, the role of America PAC and its collaboration with Elon Musk will continue to be scrutinized. Whether this alliance will significantly impact Trump’s campaign remains to be seen.
